Degree Requirements

Those concentrating in writing and mass communications take 13 to 14 English courses. If you wish to minor in writing, you must be majoring in a field other than English. Six writing courses (18 credits) in addition to English Composition are required for the minor.


Required Courses (not counted toward degree requirements):

  • English Composition

  • Introduction to Literature

Required courses for concentation

  • Approaches to Reading and Interpretation

  • Writing Workshop: Argument and Persuasion

  • Introduction to Media Analysis

  • Seminar in Writing and Mass Communications (senior year)

  • Introduction to Journalism

You will also choose either Option A or B.


Option A:

  • Survey of British Literature: Beginnings to the 18th Century

  • Survey of British Literature: 19th Century to the Present

  • Survey of American Literature: Beginnings to the Present

Option B (one elective from each of the following areas):

  • Area 1: English Literature before 1500, the History of the English Language, or English Drama 900-1642

  • Area 2: English Literature from 1500-1800: Renaissance Literature, Shakespeare, 17th-Century Prose and Poetry, Milton, and 18th-Century Literature

  • Area 3: 19th-Century and 20th-Century English Literature

  • Area 4: American Literature; American Studies

Electives (choose 1):

  • Creative Writing

  • Writing Workshop: Poetry

  • Creative Nonfiction

Electives (choose 1):

  • Magazine Writing

  • Business and Technical Writing

  • Writing and Editing

Electives (choose 3):

  • Speech

  • Film and Literature

  • Introduction to Film Studies

  • American Film Since 1940

  • Acting

  • TV Communications Skills

  • TV Production I

  • TV Production II

  • Electronic Communications and Multimedia

  • Academic Internship (minimum of 2.8 GPA required)

Minor in Writing

A minor in writing includes six classes (18 credits) in writing, two of which may be Writing Emphasis literature classes.

A minor in writing is only available to students not majoring in English.


Required courses for minor in Writing

  • English composition (does not count toward 6 courses)

  • 6 writing courses which may include writing emphasis courses in literature or Psycholinguistics or Sociolinguistics
