Elementary Education Concentration Requirements

For this concentration, you must major in biology, chemistry, classics, English, environmental science, French, history, Italian, mathematics, or Spanish.


Concentration Courses

  • ENG 130 English Composition

  • LIT 140 Introduction to Literature or FREE 140 or ITA 140 Introduction to Literature: Italian Language or SPA 140 Introduction to Literature: Spanish Language

  • ENG 263 Children’s Literature

  • At least 2 mathematics courses

    • MAT 114 Elementary Functions or above

    • MAT 150 Numbers and Operations for Educators

  • At least 1 lab science course (BIO 140 Inquiry Biology for Educators is strongly recommended)

  • 2 history courses required from among a selection of courses (HIS118 History of Modern Europe and the United State I and HIS 119 History of Modern Europe and the United States II are strongly recommended)

  • PSY 190 Psychology of Development: Infancy and Childhood

  • 1 course from Art, Music or Theater that satisfies the Core requirement

  • EDU 201 Schools and Society: An Introduction to American Education

  • EDU 220 Teaching and Learning in the Elementary School

  • EDU 323 History and the Social Sciences in the Elementary Curriculum

  • EDU 324 Mathematics in the Elementary Curriculum

  • EDU 325 Literacy Development and Instruction

  • EDU 321 Science and Technology in the Elementary Classroom

  • EDU 365 Teaching Students with Special Needs

  • EDU 420 Practicum and Seminar in Elementary Education
