On Wednesday, March 13, the Women’s Studies “Justice For and By Women” film series presents “Granito: How to Nail a Dictator.” Granito tells the story of how Pamela Yates’ 1983 documentary, When the Mountains Tremble, provided key evidence for bringing the former Guatemalan dictator Efraín Ríos Montt to trial on charges of genocide for his brutal war against the country’s Mayan people. Granito explains how a film, aiding a new generation of human rights activists, became a "granito" -a tiny grain of sand- that helped tip the scales of justice.
Kate Doyle, a Senior Analyst for the US National Security Agency, who appears in the film, will be present to introduce the film and answer questions.
The screening will be from 7-9 pm in Kennedy Memorial Hall’s Alden Trust Auditorium and is co-sponsored by the Latin American Studies department. It is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Donna Kercher at
