Emmanuel d'Alzon Bicentennial

Emmanuel d'Alzon was born in 1810 into the French aristocracy. He gave up a life of great privilege and sacrificed much of the family fortune to advance Catholicism in France and abroad. His most cherished project was the establishment of a Catholic university, which ultimately resulted in the creation of Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Augustinians of the Assumption, the religious order founded by Father d'Alzon, continues to guide Assumption College today.

Fr. d’Alzon’s commitment to the pursuit of truth and academic excellence is reflected at Assumption College today. His belief that faith and reason give witness to the unity of all truth was central to his teaching as he sought to develop the whole person — that tradition continues as well. Time has not dimmed Fr. d’Alzon’s message or mission.

Two hundred years after his birth, the Assumptionists have spread far beyond France and are found throughout the world. Beginning in November 2009 through November 2010, there will be events at the College and abroad marking Fr. d’Alzon’s birth and contributions.

The Emmanuel d’Alzon Bicentennial celebrations will allow the Augustinians of the Assumption and Assumption College to remember the man and his accomplishments.
